The water buffalo was domesticated 5000 years before cattle.  They are used for meat, milk & draft.  Their milk is the preferred milk used by the Italians to make mozarella cheese.

We bought our first water buffalo in 2004.  We bought two 8-month old cows and then a year old bull.  We had our first calves born in July of 2006.  We have had a 100 % calf crop every year since then.

The water buffalo are pasture fed and have proven to be excellent for this area.  They are maintenance free.  We do not vaccinate or worm them.  They are always fat and healthy.  Even when the cows have a calf on them they are fat.  Unlike the cattle they aren't pulled down by having a calf on them.

Water buffalo are actually easier to raise than cattle since we don't have to work them for worming or vaccinations.

Wendy with a new calf, our bull throws lots of calves this color.  When they are grown, they turn kind of a beige color.
